  • Traditional Midwifery, Ritual Cleansing and Cultural Continuity: A Study of Pelimau Dapur in Malay Society
    Vol. 1 No. 2 (2026)

Authors: Nurul Asmaa Akmal Md Din, Sri Qamariah Mohd Samsir, Nor Azita Che Din, Nurul Haniza Samsudin & Awang Azman Awang Pawi

Synopsis: This book discusses pelimau dapur, a traditional Malay ritual in Terengganu performed after a woman completes her postnatal confinement period. The study focuses on the community of Kampung Alor Limbat, Marang, Terengganu, where this practice is still preserved as part of Malay cultural heritage and traditional midwifery.
Pelimau dapur is regarded as a “release” ritual after the mother has completed her confinement, usually after 40 or 44 days of childbirth. The ritual is performed by a traditional midwife using specific materials such as pure water, lime or kaffir lime, flour or traditional powder, together with prayers and selected verses from the Quran. In the past, coconut leaves were also used as part of the release ritual, but they have since been replaced with flour or powder due to changes in belief and adaptation to Islamic teachings.
This book also explains the role of traditional midwives in Malay society, especially as experienced individuals who care for mothers after childbirth. Through interviews and observations involving two midwives in Kampung Alor Limbat, the study describes how the ritual is performed, the materials used, the changes in practice from the past to the present, and the philosophy behind the ritual.
Overall, this book highlights that pelimau dapur is not merely a traditional ritual, but also reflects the values of purity, cleanliness, orderliness, perfection, caution and the wisdom of earlier Malay society. This study is important as an effort to document Malay midwifery heritage so that it will not be forgotten by future generations.

  • Malay Weaving Technology
    Vol. 1 No. 6 (2026)

Authors: Nur Azimah Mohd Bukhari and Nurul Haniza Samsudin

    Synopsis:

Malay Weaving Technology is often explored merely through the lens of aesthetics and the beauty of attire. However, this manuscript reveals a far greater dimension: it is a manifestation of mechanical engineering, mathematics, and outstanding indigenous science. This book invites readers to immerse themselves in the brilliance of intellect and local wisdom of the Malay community, particularly in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang, who have long mastered the detailed knowledge and technology of textile production.

Based on this manuscript, readers are guided through traditional mechanical engineering innovations behind the creation of complex and efficient weaving tools such as the kek, rahat-ruing, and anian. The book also uncovers indigenous ingenuity in textile science and mathematics through eight interconnected production processes that demand exceptional precision beginning with dyeing, menerai, menganing, menggulung, menyampak, mengarat, menyongket, and culminating in the weaving process itself. Readers are further exposed to technical accuracy calculations through weaving techniques rich in philosophy, such as tekat, colek, beragi, berjalur, and ikat.

More than just documentation of ancient handicraft heritage, this book serves as a benchmark to elevate socioterminology and local wisdom. By recording cultural vocabulary, terminology, and technical processes from these artisan groups, the manuscript aims to demonstrate that the Malay language possesses the capacity and capability to be recognized as a language of advanced technology on the international stage. The compilation of dialectal and technical terminology also reveals that the concept of traditional weaving technology is highly valuable and holds great potential for application in modern global textile industry innovations.

This book is a comprehensive reference, highly suitable for researchers, heritage art enthusiasts, linguists and technologists, as well as the general public who wish to witness firsthand the wisdom of Malay traditional knowledge functioning as a complete technology that remains relevant across time.
