Author Guidelines

Manuscript Template

All manuscripts must be prepared using the official JSIA template. Download the template before you start writing:

The package contains the LaTeX source (JSIA_Template.tex, references.bib), the Word template (JSIA_Template.docx), and PDF previews of both.

Types of Articles

JSIA publishes original research articles, reviews, short communications and case studies within the journal's Aims and Scope.

Formatting Requirements

  • Double-column layout, 10 pt Times New Roman, A4, as set in the template.
  • Length, including references, tables and figures: Original Articles, Review Articles and Case Studies up to 12 pages; Short Communications up to 6 pages.
  • Title: concise and descriptive.
  • Abstract: a single paragraph of no more than 250 words, without citations, undefined abbreviations or footnotes.
  • Keywords: three to five keywords, separated by semicolons.
  • Structure: Introduction, Related Work, Methodology, Results and Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgements, References (as in the template).
  • References: APA (author-year) style.
  • Leave the Cite-as line, DOI and dates as placeholders. The editorial office assigns them at acceptance.

Double-Blind Peer Review

Every submission is reviewed double-blind by at least two independent expert reviewers. For the review version, remove author names, affiliations and acknowledgements, and refer to your own previous work in the third person. Author details are entered in the submission form and restored in the final version after acceptance.

Use of Generative AI

The use of generative AI tools in preparing the manuscript must be clearly disclosed in the Acknowledgements section. AI tools cannot be listed as authors. Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the content.

Publication Ethics

JSIA follows the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines. Submissions must be original, not published or under consideration elsewhere, and free of plagiarism. Authors must declare any conflicts of interest.

Fees, Copyright and Licence

JSIA does not charge any article processing charges (APC). Published articles are open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) licence. After acceptance, the corresponding author must sign and upload the JSIA Copyright Transfer Agreement, which transfers copyright to the journal (or, where a funder requires authors to retain copyright, grants an exclusive Licence to Publish).

How to Submit

Submit online through this OJS site: register or log in, then select Make a Submission. Upload the manuscript as a Word (.docx) file, or as a PDF compiled from the LaTeX template. All correspondence concerning manuscripts should be sent to csnet@um.edu.my.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The manuscript is prepared using the official JSIA template (LaTeX or Word) and does not exceed 12 pages (6 pages for Short Communications) including references, tables and figures.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • The manuscript is anonymised for double-blind review: author names, affiliations and acknowledgements are removed.
  • The abstract is a single paragraph of no more than 250 words, followed by three to five keywords.
  • References follow the APA (author-year) style, and URLs or DOIs are provided where available.
  • Any use of generative AI tools is disclosed in the Acknowledgements section.
  • All authors agree to transfer copyright to the journal upon acceptance (or to grant a Licence to Publish where a funder requires it) and to publication under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) licence.

Original Articles

Full-length original research contributing new knowledge, methods, systems or empirical findings in security and information applications. Up to 12 pages in the JSIA template, including references, tables and figures. Double-blind peer review by at least two reviewers.

Review Articles

Comprehensive or systematic reviews that synthesise the state of the art, identify research gaps and propose future directions within the JSIA scope. Up to 12 pages in the JSIA template, including references, tables and figures. Double-blind peer review by at least two reviewers.

Short Communications

Concise reports of preliminary results, feasibility studies, novel ideas or significant findings that merit rapid dissemination. Up to 6 pages in the JSIA template, including references, tables and figures. Double-blind peer review by at least two reviewers.

Case Studies

Reports on the real-world design, deployment or evaluation of security and information systems, including lessons learned for practitioners. Up to 12 pages in the JSIA template, including references, tables and figures. Double-blind peer review by at least two reviewers.

Copyright Notice

Security and Information Applications (JSIA) is an open-access journal published by the Centre of Research for Cyber Security and Network (CSNET), Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universiti Malaya. By submitting a manuscript, the authors agree to the following terms.

  1. Copyright transfer. If and when the manuscript is accepted for publication, the authors transfer copyright of the article to the journal, Security and Information Applications (JSIA), by signing the JSIA Copyright Transfer Agreement. The corresponding author signs on behalf of all authors. The article is not published until the signed agreement is received.
  2. Open-access licence. Published articles are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). Anyone may read, download, share, adapt and reuse the work for any purpose, provided the original authors and the initial publication in JSIA are properly credited.
  3. Rights retained by authors. Authors keep the right to be identified as the authors; to reuse the article, in whole or in part, in their own thesis, teaching, books and later works; to post the preprint, the accepted manuscript and the published version in institutional or subject repositories and on personal websites, with a citation and link to the published article; and to retain patent and other intellectual property rights in any process or method described in the article.
  4. Funder mandates. Authors whose funder or institution requires them to retain copyright (for example, under Plan S, UKRI or Wellcome policies) may sign the Licence to Publish option in the same agreement instead. They keep copyright and grant JSIA an exclusive licence to publish the article under CC BY 4.0.
  5. Warranty. Authors confirm that the work is original, has not been published elsewhere, that they have the authority to transfer these rights, and that any third-party material has been cleared for publication under CC BY 4.0.
